Job Description

Title: Recreation Director

Position Summary: This is a highly responsible administrative position involving planning, developing, organizing, implementing and supervising a comprehensive group of recreational, social and cultural programs for all ages.

Supervision: Works under the general supervision of the Town Administrator.

Supervision Exercised: Supervises part time seasonal, intermittent employees, volunteers and other staff as assigned.

Examples of Essential Duties:

  1. Develop near-term and long-range planning for programs; prepare and distribute surveys as needed to town residents to assess recreational needs of community; establish program priorities as determined by community needs; develop, coordinate, and implement a variety of community recreational, social and cultural programs for all segments of the community; and continually review and evaluate recreational programs and facilities.
  2. Develop and review general policies and guidelines; and plan work according to seasonal schedule and develop program schedules, tournaments, and special
  3. Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate part-time seasonal and intermittent employees; identify and implement training programs for all employees and volunteers; and periodically visit various fields and facilities to observe recreation programs in progress.
  4. Prepare annual operating and capital improvement budgets; responsible for the collection and accounting of various fees and charges; and administer the Responsible for inventory control and purchasing.
  5. Coordinate local and regional activities with Town departments, Bolton Public Schools, and private and public recreational, civic, social, and cultural organizations; and identify sources and prepare proposals to public and private organizations that provide grant money and/or support for recreational purposes.
  6. Provide community outreach by working, meeting, and speaking with the community; prepare brochures, news releases and other public relations materials; and advertise the availability of recreation programs.

Examples of Incidental Duties:

  1. Where needs are expressed that cannot be met by the resources of the Town of Bolton, work with other towns to develop regional recreation programs that satisfy those needs; and monitor programs offered by neighboring towns for their applicability to Bolton.
  2. Serve as a representative of the Town of Bolton to county, regional, and State organizations concerned with Participate in professional recreational organizations to enhance professional development in the field of recreation.
  3. Prepare periodic narrative and statistical reports for the Town Administrator upon request.
  4. Performs other related duties as the job requires.

Minimum Qualifications Required:

- The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with a Bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education or a closely related area, and two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in municipal or group recreation administration or any equivalent combination of education and experience, a portion of which should be in a supervisory capacity. Relevant work experience in municipal or group recreation may be substituted for the educational requirement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in executing the principles and practices of municipal recreation including planning, organizing, budgeting and program evaluation; thorough knowledge of practices, techniques and technology used in recreation execution and management; thorough knowledge of data processing techniques and applications.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to compose letters and reports and create program information and surveys. Ability to deal effectively with staff and general public.

License or Certificate:

-Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
