The 39 Steps is one of the earliest 'man on the run' thrillers. Buchan introduces Richard Hannay who is caught up in a dramatic race against a plot to devastate the British war effort. The 39 Steps is Buchan's best known novel and has been continuously in print since it's first publication in 1915, inspiring 3 film adaptations.
